In 2001 I visited South Africa on my way to and from Madagascar. I stopped in Johannesburg on my way, and Capetown on my way back. In Joburg, I contracted with a man by the name of Etienne Marais from the local Audubon society to show me around. Details of the trip itinerary may be found here Itinerary_JobergItinerary
I saw my first Ostrich at Borakalalo National Park (Game Reserve) on October 5. I had 6 other sightings in November on my trips out of Capetown. This species is Struthio camelus (Common Ostrich). In 2005, the form found in Northeast Africa was split as a separate species (Somali Ostrich). I have not seen this version. This family consists of only these birds.
This family can only be seen in Sub-Saharan Africa. Below is Common Ostrich and its range.
